Augenzeugenbericht

Mr.W. Tietzke reported, that he as small boy was at the crash-site, and he saw some dead "pilots". They were put in boxes on a meadow close to the crash-place . Possibly all were buried in Rottstock at that time what however is not confirmed. Also the graveyard of Görzke been able to be their first place for rest.

Some years later he learned more about it. In the bomber-wreck, five crewmembers died. He informed us about many details, that recently time of us were compared with the report of the 77. Squadron Association . The information is correct almost completely in agreement so that details from the report are presented here:

Sgt A.R.Baxter, Pilot. Had baled out and landed safely but he appeared to be wounded. It is not clear if he was dead or alive when found but it was evident that he had taken out his cigarette lighter to light a cigarette which he had apparently smoked. The lighter was found beside his body.

Sgt A.L.Thomas, Flight Engineer. His body was found in the wreckage having been killed by cannon fire during the attack by the JU88. The aircraft had apparently broken in two.

Sgt V.J.G.Green, Rear Gunner. Was found dead hanging partly out of his turret. His parachute was open but his foot was trapped within the turret.

Sgt O.W.Wood, Wireless Operator. Was found dead within the wreckage and is believed to have been killed by cannon fire during the attack.

Pilot Officer J.Saxon, Navigator was found some distance from the aircraft and was without his parachute. He had been killed as he struck the ground and it is thought that he had failed to clip his parachute on correctly and this had been torn from him by the slip-stream.

Sgt Lane was shown photographs of what were alleged to be the graves of his comrades and was told that the details would be sent to the Red Cross. He was not told of the location of the graves.

Sgt A.R.Baxter, Pilot.

Sgt A.L.Thomas, Flugingenieur.

Sgt V.J.G.Green, hinter Kanonier.
